Lumbar Stenosis

Lumbar stenosis is the result of the narrowing of the spinal canal of your lumbar vertebrae (low back), which surrounds your spinal cord.

When this narrowing occurs it can begin to cause pain. In addition to pain the compression of the spinal cord can also cause numbness or tingling into the legs, muscle weakness and radiation of pain.

The main physical causes of spinal Stenosis are:

  1. Degeneration of the lumbar spine and discs

    • As we age we can expect some normal degeneration of the spine and its structures.Degeneration of the spine does not always result in spinal stenosis but is most often the primary cause.

  2. Osteoporosis

  3. Disc bulges or herniations into the canal putting pressure on the spinal cord.

  4. Tumor or foreign body

With proper education you can prevent many of these causes and manage your low back pain.

Patients who chronically suffer from this condition are often in poor physical condition and lack the proper strength and endurance of the back stabilizing muscles. The importance of maintaining a strong core to protect your low back is extremely important! Proper instruction, from Dr. Baldwin, about your postural habits can reduce the detrimental effects of inactivity on the spine. Education about correct lifting form can reduce these episodes of low back pain and help you build a healthy strong spine.
