Active Release Technique (ART)

Dr. Kris utilizes this soft tissue movement and massage technique to treat many conditions of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves.

Some conditions that often resolve quickly with Active Release Therapy: Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow among others. Many of these problems occur due to the overuse of muscles.

Overuse injuries happen in 3 ways:

  1. Acute trauma: sudden collisions, trauma, pulls tears, etc.

  2. Microtrauma: repetitive use accumulating micro-tears/ trauma

  3. Lack of Oxygen (hypoxia): muscles and tissue not receiving proper blood flow and oxygen begin to cause pain.

All three of these injury types can result in the body forming dense scar tissue. This scar tissue can trap or bind up muscles, fascia, joints, and nerves keeping them from moving freely. Muscles may become weaker and could put extra strain on tendons causing tendonitis. Scar tissue can also trap nerves and cause numbness or tingling.

What is active release therapy like?

Dr. Kris will use his hand to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of different muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments or nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining specific pressure/ tension with patient-specific movements. There is an extensive list of these specific pressure/ tension movements Dr. Kris can utilize to effectively treat your condition.

We highly recommend patients talk to us or visit our office to determine if this may be a good fit for you.
